Geniculate Artery Embolization (GAE)

At Premier Vascular, we are proud to offer an advanced, minimally invasive treatment designed to help patients regain mobility and improve quality of life. Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE) is a highly effective option for those suffering from chronic knee pain, especially due to osteoarthritis.

What is Genicular Artery Embolization?

GAE is a leading-edge outpatient procedure that reduces knee pain by targeting small arteries (genicular arteries) that supply the inflamed lining of the knee joint. By blocking these blood vessels, GAE helps decrease inflammation and ease pain — without the need for major surgery.

Who is a Candidate for GAE?

GAE may be ideal for you if:
◆ You have knee pain caused by osteoarthritis.
◆ You are not a candidate for traditional knee replacement at this time.
◆ Pain persists despite medications, physical therapy, or injections.
◆ You want to avoid or delay total knee replacement surgery.
◆ You prefer a minimally invasive option with a quick recovery.
Our vascular specialists will assess your condition to determine if GAE is the right choice for you.

What to Expect

GAE is performed under mild sedation. Using image guidance, a catheter is placed through a small puncture, and tiny particles are delivered to block the targeted arteries. The procedure typically takes 1–2 hours, and patients go home the same day.

Frequently Asked Questions About Genicular Artery Embolization

GAE is primarily used to treat chronic knee pain caused by osteoarthritis. It works by reducing blood flow to the inflamed areas of the joint.

GAE is a nonsurgical, outpatient procedure that involves no large incisions and no removal or replacement of the joint. Recovery is faster and less intensive than with knee replacement surgery. Having the GAE procedure does NOT exclude you from potential future knee replacements.

The procedure is generally well tolerated. Patients receive sedation and feel minimal discomfort. Some soreness at the puncture site is normal and short-lived.

Most patients notice improvement in pain and mobility within a few weeks, with continued progress over several months.

Coverage varies by provider and plan. Our staff will work with you and your insurance company to confirm benefits and provide cost information.

If you’re interested in GAE, talk to your doctor or contact us directly to schedule a consultation. We’ll review your medical history and symptoms to determine if GAE is right for you.
